Empire Rising is a novel. Some of the characters in it were living people; some of the events actually happened. They have been given places in a work of fiction. It is my story, in other words, and I’m sticking to it.

Still, no novelist really works alone. I am grateful to my Aunt May Delpezzo (née Mary Kelly), whose tales of immigrant life in the Bronx were the inspiration for the book. She passed away on November 16, 2004, at eighty-five years of age. She’ll be missed dearly.

Two other books furnished details of the Empire State Building’s construction: Building the Empire State, edited by Carol Willis, and The Empire State Building: The Making of a Landmark, by John Tauranac.

I am blessed with a great agent, Nat Sobel, and an incredible editor, Paul Elie. They may not always agree with each other, but I almost always agree with both of them.
